Japanese Maigasa Umbrella
Whether paired with a beautiful kimono or in the hands of an elegant Geisha, Japanese traditional umbrellas (wagasa) are a popular fashion accessory as well as an eye-catching home decor piece. Maigasa, in particular, are used for performance by dancers.
This vintage Japanese umbrella is covered in a sheer two-tone fabric with black paper at the edge. The headpiece at the very top is a lacquered black cap. The outer ribs are painted with black lacquer to match. The inner frame is made of bamboo painted black with multi-colored strings in a star pattern to tie it all together. The handle is made of a combination of bamboo, resin plastic, and metal painted black with a metal stopper pin and a bamboo coil handle. It also screws apart at the middle of the handle for easy storage.
