Vintage Japanese Wooden Decorative Plaque

This vintage Japanese wooden souvenir plaque features a Haiku poem about Washuzan, a mountain in the Setonaikai National Park in Okayama. The illustration is of Mukuchijima or Mukuchi island, which is famous for the elephant-shaped Zoiwa rock. It has calligraphy on the back. This plaque has a red and white braided cord and a small bell.

Ema is a small wooden plaque used at Shinto shrines, and sometimes Buddhist temples, that worshipers can write their wishes, hopes, and dreams on. Once written, it is hung on a special wooden stand or tree where the kami (spirits or gods) are thought to receive them.
