Japanese Hanging Scroll Kakejiku

This vintage Japanese hanging scroll (kakejiku or makimono) features 33 boxes to place 33 red seals (goshuin) from the temples and places of the Bando Sanjusankasho or Bando 33 Kannon Pilgrimage, a circuit located in Kanto region. This kakejiku is blank and does not have any red seal.

Kakejiku is a Japanese picture or calligraphy mounted on a piece of paper. Kakejiku was a tool to spread Buddhism in Japan. It has been integrated with Japanese culture as interior decoration. Tokokake is used at the Tokonoma in tatami room. Chakake has Zen words used in the tea ceremony room. Buddha-kake is used in the Buddhist altar.
