Japanese Hanging Scroll Kakejiku W/ Wooden Box
This vintage Japanese boxed hanging scroll (called kakejiku or makimono) features a man carrying rice straw on his back. There is a boat on a river and houses in the foreground. In the background, there are mountains and trees. This type of kakejiku is called sansui, literally mountains and water. It is painted in color, mostly green, brown, and black. This piece is signed with a name and a red seal. The box has inscriptions on the outside and the inside of the lid.
Kakejiku is a Japanese picture or calligraphy mounted on a piece of paper. Kakejiku was a tool to spread Buddhism in Japan. It has been integrated with Japanese culture as interior decoration. Tokokake is used at the Tokonoma in tatami room. Chakake has Zen words used in the tea ceremony room. Buddha-kake is used in the Buddhist altar.
