Vtg Japanese Ceramic Maneki Neko Piggy Bank
This is a vintage Japanese ceramic piggy bank in the shape of a maneki neko cat (beckoning cat). It is a black cat with a red collar with a gold tag that says fuku 福, or "fortune" on it. It holds a koban gold coin that says sen man ryo, or "10million ryo" on it. Ryo was a currency used during the Edo period. It has a slot at the back of the head to put coins. There are small holes on the bottom, but they are too small for most sizes of coins to slip out. The beckoning right paw symbolises the welcoming of wealth and fortune (usually for a business). There is a 5 yen coin inside. Whether it was placed there on purpose or it wasn't able to be removed, 5 yen (go-en) is a homophone with another word which means "destiny" or "fortunate connection".
