Vintage Japanese Wooden Storage Box for Hanging Scroll
Hand-crafted and in a medium brown color, this Japanese scroll box (kakejiku hako) is made to store a hanging scroll. The lid fits loosely and unsecured on the top. There are no brackets inside. There is kanji writing on the lid.
Typically on display in Japanese tokonoma alcoves in homes and other traditional establishments such as ryokan, traditional Japanese inns, hanging scrolls have various themes, from seasonal/holiday images to poems to Buddhist text and imagery. For additional decorative detail, it's popular to add scroll weights, or fuchin, which are tassels with heavy polished stones that hang from the bottom end caps.
