Japanese Wall Hanging Frame Tanzaku-kake
This is a vintage Japanese wall hanging frame, Tanzaku-kake, made of wood or thick paper covered with washi paper on the back with a framed Tanzaku. A Tanzaku is a long and narrow Shikishi used for painting and writing Japanese poems such as Haiku or Tanka. The Tanzaku features a oshie pressed textile design with a kabuto helmet, a Japanese katana sword, and an iris flower (hana shoubu in Japanese). This design is perfect for Kodomo No Hi (Children's Day). There is a orange string with tassels to hang up the Tanzaku-kake. This item comes in a box.
There are three basic types of shikishi paper—calligraphy (poem, haiku) only, calligraphy with pictures, and pictures only. Since the Heian period, people have been writing waka and haiku on Shikishi paper (various sizes), but in the Meiji period, they started using paper of the current size. In the current day, shikishi paper/boards are used for autographs of celebrities and also commemorative messages to friends, coworkers, and classmates.
