Japanese Shikishi Art Board Painting

This Japanese shikishi art board is a printed reproduction representing two mice dressed in human clothing. One mouse is carrying a lucky mallet (Uchide no kozuchi) and the other one is pulling a bell. It is painted in black and white. It is signed with a name and a red seal, and is stored in a plastic sleeve. There is a paper on the back with explanations in Japanese.

There are three basic types of shikishi paper—calligraphy (poem, haiku) only, calligraphy with pictures, and pictures only. Since the Heian period, people have been writing waka and haiku on Shikishi paper (various sizes), but in the Meiji period, they started using paper of the current size. In the current day, shikishi paper/boards are used for autographs of celebrities and also commemorative messages to friends, coworkers, and classmates.
