Japanese Maegawara For Chagama Kettle Brazier
This is a vintage Japanese ceramic maegawara plate used inside the brazier for a cast iron chagama kettle. It is a half-moon-shaped unglazed white plate that is placed round side up in front of the fire window on a chagama's brazier to prevent fire, sparks, and ash from coming out and setting fire to tatami flooring. Chagama are used in Japanese tea ceremonies for heating water. This plate is an often forgotten piece of a chagama and brazier set.
