Japanese Buddhist Altar Fitting Flower Vase
This is a vintage Japanese metal flower vase, or hanatate, for Buddhist altars. Usually, flower vases for Buddhist altars have a very simple and subtle design. This vase is in the kacho style, and it features sculptural reliefs with a bird and flowers on the front and the back. It is a vessel for Sakaki leaves or Shashagi leaves. The meaning of offering sakaki tree leaves is that we believe the gods' living sakaki tree will protect the grave and the soul. Offering a range of seasonal and symbolic flowers in front of the altar is also common.
