Vtg Japanese Clay Bell Dorei
This is a vintage Japanese clay bell, Dorei or Tsuchi-Suzu, in the shape of a gorgeous kagamimochi display. Kagamimochi is a classic New Years motif and real display item where there are stacked rice cakes that represent the sun, moon, and good fortune. It is topped with a daidai bitter orange. It is a custom of Kyoto that is popularily used nationwide. It is painted white with red, and green. There is a small white clay ball inside.
Dorei bells have a long history and have been used in festivals and ceremonies since the Jomon period (about 13000 to 2300 years ago) when they were said to have the power to ward off evil spirits.
