Vtg Japanese Clay Bell Dorei
This is a vintage Japanese clay bell, Dorei or Tsuchi-Suzu, in the shape of a Hina daruma doll. Commonly seen in pairs much like traditional Hina dolls, Hime Daruma are just as they are described, princess/hinasama faces within round daruma bodies. This particular hime daruma is red with a painted shochikubai motif (bamboo, plum, pine). It has a tan-colored string at the top, and a small tan ball inside. Hina Matsuri is an annual festival on the 3rd of March each year that celebrates girls with elaborate displays of dolls representing royal courts of old times.
Dorei bells have a long history and have been used in festivals and ceremonies since the Jomon period (about 13000 to 2300 years ago) when they were said to have the power to ward off evil spirits.
