Vintage Japanese Shikishi Art Board Painting
This is a vintage Japanese zodiac shikishi art board. It is hand-painted and features a snake crawling on a round stone or statue. The snake has a silver-like color and the stone has a matte brown color that mimics gold. The background is composed of several floral elements such as plum or cherry blossoms. This shikishi art board is signed.
There are three basic types of shikishi paper—calligraphy (poem, haiku) only, calligraphy with pictures, and pictures only. Since the Heian period, people have been writing waka and haiku on Shikishi paper (various sizes), but in the Meiji period, they started using paper of the current size. In current day, shikishi paper/boards are used for autographs of celebrities and also commemorative messages to friends, coworkers, and classmates.
