Vintage Japanese Kashigata, Cake and Candy Mold

Japanese kashigata are hand-carved wooden molds used to make higashi since the Edo period. Higashi is a broad category of wagashi (traditional Japanese sweets) and is a low-moisture treat made with soybean flour or rice flour, fine sugar, and other ingredients. These materials are packed tightly into kashigata molds and dried to create beautiful designs and shapes. Many of these sweets can be found in wagashi shops and grocery stores still today.

This large two-piece kashigata mold is intricately carved with the image of a sea bream fish (tai). Sea Bream is a bright red fish with gold eyes and is usually associated with celebrations and symbolizes good luck. This mold can be used to make sweets or as an eye-catching decorative item.
