Vintage Japanese Wooden Shrine Plaque, Ema

This vintage Japanese ema plaque features a white rat in front of an ema plaque with the Japanese character kotobuki (longevity). A red sun and pink and white plum flowers are also painted. It has a purple braided cord and two attached bells.

Ema is a small wooden plaque used at Shinto shrines, and sometimes Buddhist temples, that worshipers can write their wishes, hopes, and dreams on. Once written, it is hung on a special wooden stand or tree where the kami (spirits or gods) are thought to receive them.
