Antique Japanese Wooden Storage Box

Wooden boxes are a common method of safely keeping and storing delicate pottery, vases, and other ceramic, clay, and glass items in Japan. In addition to pottery, they are also widely used for a plethora of other traditional Japanese crafts including kimono accessories, wrapping cloths, chopsticks, commemorative gifts, etc, and even food.

This is an antique Japanese open wooden box from the Taisho era made to hold a set of ceramic or porcelain plates/dishes or bowls. There are two compartments of the same size and there are black kanji characters written on the sides. There are holes at the bottom that were once used to put twine or cords through to keep the box shut. The lid is missing, however, the box is made from strong wood and is excellent for general storage, DIY, or decoration.
