Vtg. Japanese Wooden Calligraphy Box

This is a vintage Japanese wooden portable calligraphy box. It is brushed with a clear lacquer and has a checkered design with some small patterned squares reminiscent of yosegi-zaiku puzzle boxes. It has a shutter lid with a small metal handle that rolls back to expose the inside. While the ink stone and other utensils are missing, there are specific cutout spots where they should be placed, including brush rests. There is an inner panel that is removable, likely for cleaning or adjustments. On the very bottom, there is a shallow drawer for paper, extra brushes, cloths, etc.

  • Good condition considering age. Scratches. Bubbling of lacquer coat on side. Some lacquer chipping on outside bottom edge and inside around brush rest. Wear and tear due to age. Please see the photos.
