Vtg. Japanese Wooden Storage Box for Mahjong Gamepiece Set
Wooden boxes are a common method of safely keeping and storing delicate pottery, vases, and other ceramic, clay, and glass items in Japan. In addition to pottery, they are also widely used for a plethora of other traditional Japanese crafts including kimono accessories, wrapping cloths, chopsticks, commemorative gifts, etc.
This vintage lidded rectangular box is originally made for a set of narrow drawers containing mahjong game pieces, but is perfect for storing trinkets or use for display or other crafts/projects. Its dark brown finish makes it especially decorative. The drawers are missing, however, the brackets remain and can be easily refitted with new shelves or drawers. There is a sturdy metal handle fixed to the top.
