Japanese Wooden Wall Hanging Frame Tanzaku-kake

This is a vintage Japanese wooden wall hanging frame, Tanzaku-kake, with a Tanzaku. A Tanzaku is a long and narrow Shikishi used for painting and writing Japanese poems such as Haiku or Tanka. The Tanzaku features a beautiful painting of a rising sun over an ocean. It has a signature with red seals. The frame is made of three wooden plates and strings. The top plate has an opening shaped like Mt.Fuji. The second plate has a fixture for the paper. The lower plate has a wooden carved decoration of half of a building. It is foldable but can't be folded completely.

There are three basic types of shikishi paper—calligraphy (poem, haiku) only, calligraphy with pictures, and pictures only. Since the Heian period, people have been writing waka and haiku on Shikishi paper (various sizes), but in the Meiji period, they started using paper of the current size. In the current day, shikishi paper/boards are used for autographs of celebrities and also commemorative messages to friends, coworkers, and classmates.
