Japanese Wooden Wall Hanging Frame Tanzaku-kake
This is a vintage Japanese wooden wall hanging frame, Tanzaku-kake, with a Tanzaku. A Tanzaku is a long and narrow Shikishi used for painting and writing Japanese poems such as Haiku or Tanka. The Tanzaku has a beautiful painting of blue flowers and a sparrow with a signature. The frame has a smooth texture. The upper fixture is shaped like a closed folding fan.
There are three basic types of shikishi paper—calligraphy (poem, haiku) only, calligraphy with pictures, and pictures only. Since the Heian period, people have been writing waka and haiku on Shikishi paper (various sizes), but in the Meiji period, they started using paper of the current size. In the current day, shikishi paper/boards are used for autographs of celebrities and also commemorative messages to friends, coworkers, and classmates.
