Japanese Maigasa Umbrella

Whether paired with a beautiful kimono or in the hands of an elegant Geisha, Japanese traditional umbrellas (wagasa) are a popular fashion accessory as well as an eye-catching home decor piece. Maigasa, in particular, are used for performance by dancers.
This vintage Japanese umbrella is covered in thin washi paper in a banded blue and white pattern. The headpiece at the very top is a lacquered black cap. The outer ribs are painted with black lacquer to match. The inside frame is stained black color and it is held all together by gold-colored strings. The handle is made of a combination of bamboo and metal painted black with a metal stopper pin and a bamboo coil handle. It twists apart at the center for more compact storage.
