Shunga is a type of Japanese erotic art traditionally created using ukiyo-e woodblock printing. Although these types of images and books are associated with general art and personal entertainment, the images in shunga were also used as an educational tool for young people and newly married couples.
Ukiyo-e is a genre of Japanese art that flourished from the 17th through the 19th centuries. Its artists produced woodblock prints and paintings of various subjects, including female beauties, kabuki actors and sumo wrestlers, scenes from history and folk tales, travel scenes and landscapes, flora and fauna, and erotica.
