Japanese Shikishi Art Board Painting

This vintage Japanese shikishi hand-painted art board represents a dragon flying in gray and gold thunderclouds. The dragon's head and one of its front feet are painted clearly, and its body is vague behind the cloud. The dragon's eyes are gold and seem to stare at something sharply. From the writing on the back, this is a painting of the year's zodiac. This piece is signed with names and red seals. There is some writing with a name card on the back.

There are three basic types of shikishi paper—calligraphy (poem, haiku) only, calligraphy with pictures, and pictures only. Since the Heian period, people have been writing waka and haiku on Shikishi paper (various sizes), but in the Meiji period, they started using paper of the current size. In the current day, shikishi paper/boards are used for autographs of celebrities and also commemorative messages to friends, coworkers, and classmates.
