Vtg Japanese Wooden Mochitsuki Mortar And Pestle

This is a Japanese vintage mochitsuki mortar (usu) and pestle (kine) set. This mortar and pestle set is made from wood. It is brown and has a small size, making it perfect to use as a decoration. Two handles are carved onto the wood of the mortar to facilitate transport. The Japanese character for good fortune (福 fuku) is painted on the front of the mortar.

Mochitsuki is the Japanese New Year's tradition of pounding rice to make mochi (rice cakes). It is a family and community event, often shown at events related to Japanese culture.
