Vtg Japanese Wooden Shishi Lion Mask
This is a Japanese lacquered wooden shishi lion mask. Also called komainu, these lion dogs are often depicted as guardian statues outside of temples. They are also famous for shishi-mai, or lion dance (which has a Chinese equivalent). This large carved piece can be used for room decoration or shows and dances. The mouth opens and closes on a wooden hinge and the ears are adjustable/removable.
