Vintage Japanese Shinto Prayer Bell
This is a Japanese Shinto prayer bell, or suzu. Suzu are hung above offertory boxes in shrines and often have a thick rope or ribbons hanging down. One shakes the rope to ring the bell which grabs the Kami's attention before praying. This bell is lacquered with a caramel-like brown very common of the Hida shunkei style. It has a braided rope with two red tassels.
