Japanese Lacquered Wooden Haribako Sewing Chest
This is a Japanese sewing box, also called Haribako. Lacquered with a striking deep red color, it is decorated with a bold handcarved peony as well as a scaly/hammered design. This tansu chest has five differently-sized drawers with simple metal hardware. A panel in the lid opens to reveal a narrow tray that is removable with a secret compartment behind it. There is also a slot on the side that a small ruler can fit into. This beautiful piece can also be used for storing sewing supplies, jewelry, or other trinkets.
Acquired from the famous Osu Antique Market in Nagoya, Japan
