Japanese Lacquered Lidded Fumibako Box w/ Box
This is a Japanese lacquered wooden letter box (fumibako). It is traditionally used to store letters, small books, important documents, paper, and other stationary items.
It is also often used for Buddhist items, such as altar prayer books, prayer beads, charms, and for incense storage.
This classic caramel-brown shunkei-nuri lacquer piece is a beautiful decorative and functional addition to any home or office space. It has an angular bottom piece and the lid features a raised chidori bird knob with carved pine needles and seigaiha peaceful sea waves pattern. Inside is a fabric-lined bottom with images of the phoenix Ho-oh. This item comes with the original paper box.
