Vtg Japanese Hariko Shishi Lion Mask w/Box

This is a Japanese lacquered hariko paper mache shishi lion mask. Also called komainu, these lion dogs are often depicted as guardian statues outside of temples. They are also famous for shishi-mai, or lion dance (which has a Chinese equivalent). This gorgeous piece can be used for room decoration or shows and dances. The mouth opens and closes on a wooden frame and hinge attached to string and the ears are adjustable/removable. It has a green and white cloth with a traditional karakusa pattern covering the back side. It comes with the original paper box.
