Vintage Japanese Natural Gourd Bottle
This Japanese naturally dried large hyotan gourd was not only made for storing and carrying sake and seeds but also as a good luck charm for display. It features a classic light brown color and individual curvy shape with an etched design of Benzaiten, one of the Seven Lucky Gods (shichifukujin). Benzaiten is the only goddess among the lucky gods and gives blessings of music, speech, literature, and knowledge. She is often depicted holding a Biwa lute. It has an orange silk braided cord with tassels tied around the lid and center. It has a lid in the form of a brushed lacquered piece of a tree branch. There are small stones inside to keep the gourd standing for display, however, they can be removed by request for cheaper shipping.
As a good luck charm, hyotan gourds symbolize the prosperity of descendants, preventing illness, and the success of a business. These gourds are also known to be hung at the entrance of a building with the lid off to protect entrants and the home from bad luck.
