Japanese Hanging Scroll Kakejiku

This vintage Japanese hanging scroll (kakejiku or makimono in Japanese) features a rock with trees in the foreground, and two boats sailing on the sea in the background. It is painted in neutral colors. The base of the scroll is a beautiful green. This piece is signed and has a red seal. The ends are made of ceramic.

Kakejiku is a Japanese picture or calligraphy mounted on a piece of paper. Kakejiku was a tool to spread Buddhism in Japan. It has been integrated with Japanese culture as interior decoration. Tokokake is used at the Tokonoma in tatami room. Chakake has Zen words used in the tea ceremony room. Buddha-kake is used in the Buddhist altar.
