Japanese Hanging Scroll Kakejiku W/ Box
This vintage Japanese hanging scroll (kakejiku or makimono) features a reproduction of a painting by Miyamoto Musashi called Shrike in a barren tree, registered as an important cultural property. It represents a shrike perched on a withered branch. This piece is signed with a red seal. It is stored in a box. On the box, it says Jyuyo Bunkazai meaning an important cultural property, Koboku Meigekizu meaning a picture depicting a shrike perched at the end of a single dead branch that extends straight upward, and Musashi Hitsu meaning drawn by Musashi.
Kakejiku is a Japanese picture or calligraphy mounted on a piece of ptuaper. Kakejiku was a tool to spread Buddhism in Japan. It has been integrated with Japanese culture as interior decoration. Tokokake is used at the Tokonoma in tatami room. Chakake has Zen words used in the tea ceremony room. Buddha-kake is used in the Buddhist altar.
