Japanese Hanging Scroll Kakejiku

This vintage Japanese hanging scroll (kakejiku or makimono) features an image of the Buddhist deity Kannon (Kannon Bosatsu). All around that central image, there are 33 names and goshuin stamps of sacred places such as temples part of the Saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage. This scroll has an inscription on the outside.

Kakejiku is a Japanese picture or calligraphy mounted on a piece of paper. Kakejiku was a tool to spread Buddhism in Japan. It has been integrated with Japanese culture as interior decoration. Tokokake is used at the Tokonoma in tatami room. Chakake has Zen words used in the tea ceremony room. Buddha-kake is used in the Buddhist altar.
