Japanese Hanging Scroll Kakejiku
This vintage Japanese hanging scroll (kakejiku or makimono) features a classic sansui (mountains and water) monochrome landscape. There is a high mountain in the background, a waterfall then a river in the foreground. Old houses can be seen at the center of the piece, giving it scale. This piece is signed by an artist Jyuki (possibly) and a red seal.
Kakejiku is a Japanese picture or calligraphy mounted on a piece of paper. Kakejiku was a tool to spread Buddhism in Japan. It has been integrated with Japanese culture as interior decoration. Tokokake is used at the Tokonoma in tatami room. Chakake has Zen words used in the tea ceremony room. Buddha-kake is used in the Buddhist altar.
