Japanese Hanging Scroll Kakejiku
This vintage Japanese hanging scroll (kakejiku or makimono) represents 21 Buddhist masters, such as Shinran and Rennyo. Each master's name is written next to it. At the top of the image, there are two mon crests specific to the Jodo Shinshu school. The border is green with a lace pattern.
Kakejiku is a Japanese picture or calligraphy mounted on a piece of paper. It was a tool to spread Buddhism in Japan and has been integrated with Japanese culture as interior decoration. Tokokake is used at the Tokonoma in tatami room. Chakake has Zen words used in the tea ceremony room, and Buddha-kake is used in the Buddhist altar.
