Japanese Hanging Scroll Kakejiku
This vintage Japanese hanging scroll (kakejiku or makimono in Japanese) features two birds, possibly sparrows, sitting on a bamboo branch. Bamboo leaves are also painted black. This is a monotone piece with some touches of color. This type of art is called kacho, literally birds and flowers. This piece is signed and has a red seal. There are inscriptions on the outside.
Kakejiku is a Japanese picture or calligraphy mounted on a piece of paper. Kakejiku was a tool to spread Buddhism in Japan. It has been integrated with Japanese culture as interior decoration. Tokokake is used at the Tokonoma in tatami room. Chakake has Zen words used in the tea ceremony room. Buddha-kake is used in the Buddhist altar.
