Vintage Japanese Shikishi Art of Hagoita w/ Lacquered Wooden Frame

In a red lacquered wooden frame, this handcrafted hagoita (decorated wooden paddle usually used for games during New Year) depicts a dancer carrying a traditional shishi lion puppet. Initially, lion dances were performed at shrines and temples as a means to warn off evil spirits, but today, the reasons vary from region to region. The shikishi background also depicts plum blossoms and pine trees, a very common pairing that denotes hope and longevity respectively.
Its 3D look, rich colors, and multitextured materials make this a standout piece and a perfect addition to any home or office decor.

This art piece includes scrap materials used in the crafting of the hagoita itself and the original box.
