Vtg Japanese Clay Bell Dorei
This is a vintage Japanese clay bell, Dorei or Tsuchi-Suzu. This bell is an Okame's face or Heian period woman's face. Teeth painted black is called Ohaguro. This was a custom that spread among the aristocracy during the Heian period, and both men and women (especially women) were 17 or 18 years old and dyed their teeth black to represent maturity. Dorei bells have a long history and have been used in festivals and ceremonies since the Jomon period (about 13000 to 2300 years ago) when they were said to have the power to ward off evil spirits.
