Vtg Japanese Buddhist Altar Butsudan Inner Temple
This item is a large decorative part from a Japanese vintage wooden Buddhist altar cabinet. This piece is the inner temple and the main feature of the altar. Typically it houses a statue and small scrolls at the back. It is a stunning piece with 3D carved wood pieces and decorations exactly as one might see in a real Japanese temple. It is mostly gold with a black lacquered base and brass embellishments throughout. It has an embossed brass plate at the back depicting a pond scene. There are numerous bird and floral motifs throughout.
In Japan, the Buddhist altar is a place to enshrine the principal image that is the center of faith, and is a sacred place to hold memorial services for ancestors as a "small temple in the home".
Acquired in an estate sale in Gifu, Japan
