Japanese Uchishiki Embroidered Buddhist Altar Tablecloth
This is a large vintage Japanese Buddhist altar tablecloth or uchishiki. Made of silk, the backside and the top border are white with a large chrysanthemum and paulownia flower pattern, while the front side is a combination of bright red and gold featuring chrysanthemums and paulownia flowers.
Uchishiki is mainly used by followers of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism on the upper table (Maejyoku) and the front table (Uwajyoku) in the Buddhist altar during events such as New Year's Day, the equinoctial week, Obon, and memorial services.
