Antique Japanese Incense Burner Koro for Buddhist Altar Butsugu
This item is a gorgeous antique late-Meiji to early-Taisho Japanese Buddhist bronze incense burner (Koro) with a tall stand. The burner has intricately crafted designs on the sides that feature auspicious hawks, pine trees, and lion head handles, while the top has a beautiful shishi lion (foo dog). The stand is slender with a textured top surface. It has numerous depictions of creatures such as Ho-oh the phoenix, a turtle, a snake, a dragon, and another lion. It also has a number of traditional patterns throughout such as raimon (lightning), hishi (diamond plant pattern), and waves. It also has large peonies on the legs.
This type of burner is used for burning incense powder or sticks. The incense burner has the meaning of purifying the body of the worshiper.
