Japanese Buddhist Altar Incense Sifter/Strainer
This is a vintage Japanese incense ash sifter/strainer (haikoshi or haifurui) made of metal with a gold color in the shape of a small scoop. It is a cleaning tool used primarily to separate remaining pieces of incense sticks and other debris from ash and sand/other holding material in incense burners (koro) used in Buddhist temples, in home shrines (butsudan), or at graves.
This piece was purchased at the famous Osu Antique Market in Nagoya, Japan.
