Vintage Japanese Buddhist Altar Butsudan Drawer
This item comes from a Japanese vintage wooden Buddhist altar cabinet. This deep, narrow drawer is mostly coated in classic black lacquer with red on the inside. The front contains intricate brass boarder embellishments along with some makie floral designs. The main feature is a painted makie dancing Shishi lion on a gold and black flecked background.
In Japan, the Buddhist altar is a place to enshrine the principal image that is the center of faith, and is a sacred place to hold memorial services for ancestors as a "small temple in the home".
Acquired in an estate sale in Gifu, Japan
