This is a Japanese vintage wooden tray, or obon, typically used for serving drinks and snacks to guests in one's home, business, etc.
A rich dark brown color with a clear brushed lacquer finish, this simple and sturdy rectangular tray provides both function and beautiful decor. It has some weight to it and prominently features a makie painted image of bellflowers/balloon flowers (kikyo) in gold with other plants.
