Japanese Hanging Scroll Kakejiku W/ Wooden Box
This vintage Japanese hanging scroll (kakejiku or makimono) features a Buddhist icon surrounded by the names and red seals of 88 temples of the Shikoku 88 Sacred Places pilgrimage. It is stored in a wooden box. The kanji on the box says Shikoku Hachijyu-Hachi Kasho Reijo Jyunpai Gohoinfu which means Shikoku 88 Sacred Places pilgrimage valuable seals.
Kakejiku is a Japanese picture or calligraphy mounted on a piece of paper. Kakejiku was a tool to spread Buddhism in Japan. It has been integrated with Japanese culture as interior decoration. Tokokake is used at the Tokonoma in tatami room. Chakake has Zen words used in the tea ceremony room. Buddha-kake is used in the Buddhist altar.
