Japanese Hanging Scroll Kakejiku W/ Wooden Box
This vintage Japanese hanging scroll (kakejiku or makimono) features a monochrome illustration of a crab with a calligraphed poem around it. The poem partially could be read as a small island in the Tokai region, a white sand beach, and a Crab. The original artwork is called Kani No Zu, by artist Suzuki Sekioushi. It is a dynamic monochrome piece. This piece is titled and signed with a name and red seals. It is stored in a wooden box. The top two kanjis are Banri meaning Thousands of Miles.
Kakejiku is a Japanese picture or calligraphy mounted on a piece of paper. Kakejiku was a tool to spread Buddhism in Japan. It has been integrated with Japanese culture as interior decoration. Tokokake is used at the Tokonoma in tatami room. Chakake has Zen words used in the tea ceremony room. Buddha-kake is used in the Buddhist altar.
