Vintage Japanese Shikishi Art Board Reproduction

This is a vintage Japanese shikishi art board. It features a reproduction of a woodblock painting by Shoen Uemura called Wakaba. The picture represents a woman at a window. The woman is wearing a blue kimono and Japanese traditional hair accessories. Outside of the window can be seen some green leaves of a tree. The shikishi art board has a label on the back.

There are three basic types of shikishi paper—calligraphy (poem, haiku) only, calligraphy with pictures, and pictures only. Since the Heian period, people have been writing waka and haiku on Shikishi paper (various sizes), but in the Meiji period, they started using paper of the current size. In current day, shikishi paper/boards are used for autographs of celebrities and also commemorative messages to friends, coworkers, and classmates.
