Vintage Japanese Shikishi Art Board Painting

This is a vintage Japanese shikishi art board. It is hand-painted and features a Nanban kabuto, a Japanese helmet from the Momoyama period (17th century). The helmet is painted in brown and yellow and has realistic precision. The shikishi art board is titled, signed and dated on the back and has a read seal on the front.

There are three basic types of shikishi paper—calligraphy (poem, haiku) only, calligraphy with pictures, and pictures only. Since the Heian period, people have been writing waka and haiku on Shikishi paper (various sizes), but in the Meiji period, they started using paper of the current size. In current day, shikishi paper/boards are used for autographs of celebrities and also commemorative messages to friends, coworkers, and classmates.
