Vintage Japanese Paper Wet Towel Tray
This is a three-piece set of vintage Japanese chiyogami paper wet towel trays called oshibori-oki. The design features numerous traditional Japanese motifs in brilliant red and gold. They are rectangular and flat with two raised corners. The base is made of dense paper with the decorative paper around it. These are used for presenting and holding wet towels for guests during meals.
Strong, durable, and with gorgeous designs mirroring styles found on kimono fabric, chiyogami paper is commonly found in textile art such as paper dolls and for decorating tins and boxes. As it became more widespread and popular, it is now also used for origami, accessories, book covers, and more.
