Japanese Uchishiki Embroidered Buddhist Altar Tablecloth
This is a vintage Japanese Buddhist altar tablecloth, or uchishiki. Made of silk and woven linen, the backside is plain while the main part is red with embroidered white and green peonies with gold embellishments. Like the chrysanthemum, peonies (botan) are a common feature in traditional Japanese designs and symbolize wealth and prosperity.
Uchishiki is mainly used by followers of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism on the upper table (Maejyoku) and the front table (Uwajyoku) in the Buddhist altar during events such as New Year's Day, the equinoctial week, Obon, and memorial services.
